Having a beautiful kitchen is every entertainer’s dream, and the right-now material for a beautiful kitchen is marble.

Marble is popping up in kitchen renovations everywhere, and for good reason. A beautiful marble countertop or backsplash adds an element of luxury in a modern kitchen, and an elegant note in a rustic kitchen. The tones and textures of marble make for a statement that’s both complementary and bold.

Whatever your style and space, there is a marble out there for you. But should you take the plunge? We’ve researched the pros and cons of this trending material so you can make the best decision for your kitchen upgrade.

When you think of marble, you’re probably thinking of the most commonly used types: Cararra and Calacatta. These classic marbles are the quintessential white, grey-veined marbles most commonly seen in kitchens and bathrooms. But marble doesn’t just come in white and grey: there are many natural variations of colored marble, from emerald green Verde marbles to peachy-red Rosso marbles. Marble is also available in a variety of finishes, such as matte, high-gloss polish, or a leather finish common to darker stones.

Maintenance

The practical benefits of marble in the kitchen are vast, as the material is heat resistant, durable, and will not easily chip or dent. However, marble is one of the more porous materials out there, making it susceptible to staining and etching. A backsplash is generally located in a vulnerable area for spills and splashes, so it’s necessarily to seal your marble backsplash or countertop with a penetrating sealant that will seep into the pores of the stone, adding a level of stain resistance. Danby marble, another white and grey marble that is quarried in Vermont, is the densest marble available, and therefore the most resistant to staining and etching.

Keep in mind that sealants will need to be reapplied over time to ensure optimal protection. To keep your marble fresh, be sure to clean spills as they happen with a mild soap or liquid dishwashing detergent, as abrasive pads and even all-purpose cleaners are generally too harsh to use on marble.

 Cost

Depending on the retailer and quality of materials, the price of marble can vary considerably. Contractors usually have a list of preferred vendors, and materials can range anywhere from $10-$250 per square foot. The price of marble by the square foot is also influenced by availability, slab thickness, and taxes involved with importing the marble from wherever it is quarried. Installation costs, however, aren’t any different than those for other materials.

Faux-marble laminate countertops have also gotten a lot of attention as the marble countertop trend has taken off. This material has the look of granite for a fraction of the cost, and is nearly as durable.

Countertop installations are one of the more simple home renovation DIYs, but before you try to save money on installation costs, think about all of the factors so you can protect your investment from expensive mistakes.

So there you have it: marble countertops are versatile, durable, and relatively easy to maintain. And although they are not the most inexpensive material, their quality certainly makes them worthy of an investment.

Would you upgrade your countertops and backsplashes to marble?
